The list is compiled by ranking UK cities and towns with the highest Glassdoor Job Score. This is worked out by weighting three factors equally:
- how easy it is to get a job (hiring opportunity) – ratio of active job openings to population. (Job openings per city and town represent active job listings on Glassdoor as of 19/6/16. Population data is according to the The Office For National Statistics, General Register Office for Scotland and The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency.
- how affordable it is to live there (cost of living) – Cost of living is determined by the ratio of median annual base salary to median average home value. (Median annual base salary per location based on at least 100 salary reports shared by local employees on Glassdoor over the past year (20/6/15-19/6/16). Average home value is according to the Zoopla’s Zed-Index average House Prices, as of 29 June 2016.
- how satisfied employees are working there (overall job satisfaction) – Overall job satisfaction rating per location is determined by combining local company overall ratings (60%), career opportunities ratings (20%), and work-life balance ratings (20%).
As part of this report, Glassdoor includes each city and town’s median pay for employees, current average home value, overall job satisfaction rating, population and number of current job openings.

Dr Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist for Glassdoor, said: ‘These results are a reminder that although there are more jobs in London and employees are generally pretty satisfied, it is a competitive place to work and an expensive place to live.
‘Towns and cities such as Nottingham, Leeds, Reading and Coventry offer decent salaries and job prospects combined with a lower cost of living which means your money will go further, you can save, and still and have a good quality of life.’
Industries such as marketing, sales, construction and web design Coventry are all professions that have helped Coventry reach 6th place in the national table.
To be included in the list, each area needed to have received at least 100 ratings on the website from current or former employees and the area must have had a population of at least 150,000.
